AFK Screen Lock for Streamers, Traders, and Dashboard Users
Some workflows depend on a screen that has to stay on while you can't. A live Twitch broadcast. A trading chart you can't blank out mid-session. A NOC dashboard at a help desk. A trade-show kiosk. A wall-mounted analytics monitor in a meeting room. In all of these, pressing Win+L when you stand up isn't an option — the whole point is that the screen must keep working.
This article is about the AFK ("away from keyboard") lock pattern for that group of users. The setup is the same regardless of whether you're streaming Apex Legends, watching SPY/QQQ, or operating a customer-service queue display.
The shape of the problem
Your desktop is split into two roles:
- Public monitor(s): the screen(s) that must stay visible — your OBS source, your trading dashboard, your kiosk app, your wall-mounted info screen.
- Private monitor(s): the screen(s) with everything else — chat windows, email, browser tabs, admin tools, your Steam library, anything you don't want a roommate / coworker / passer-by to read.
Windows' built-in lock can't preserve the public monitor. It locks the whole session, and OBS captures a black frame, the trading dashboard stops updating in the foreground, and the kiosk shows a sign-in prompt. Selective screen-lock tools exist for exactly this split — leave the public monitor alone, lock everything else.
Setup for streamers (OBS / Streamlabs)
Most streamers run at least two monitors: monitor 1 with the game or content, monitor 2 with OBS, Twitch chat, Streamlabs, Discord, music, and browser tabs. When you AFK for a bathroom break or to grab a drink, you want:
- OBS to keep capturing whatever scene is live.
- Your chat / Discord / browser to be invisible.
- The mouse to not accidentally drag a window onto the wrong monitor while you're up.

Pro tip: pair this with an OBS "BRB" scene. Hotkey the scene switch and the lock at the same time. Hit one keyboard shortcut, get up, come back, type your password, hit the hotkey again to switch back. Viewers see polish, not a panic.
Setup for traders and analysts
A common day-trader setup: one or two chart screens (TradingView, ThinkOrSwim, IBKR), one news screen (Bloomberg terminal, X feed, Reddit), one screen for execution and admin (the broker order ticket, email, banking).
When you step away from the desk during market hours, you usually don't want to log out — autorefresh on charts and news matters, alerts need to keep firing. But the order ticket has account balances and PnL on it that you don't want roommates or visitors seeing. Selective lock on the order-ticket monitor only solves it.
Same setup works for crypto traders watching multi-exchange dashboards and for sports traders watching odds feeds.
Setup for NOC / help-desk dashboards
Operations teams often have one monitor showing a live status board (Grafana, Datadog, New Relic, PagerDuty) and another with their actual workstation (tickets, email, chat). At shift handover or on a coffee break, the dashboard needs to stay live — that's what the team is paid to watch — but the rest of the screen has internal tickets, customer PII, and chat logs that shouldn't be visible from across the room.
Same pattern: lock the workstation monitor(s), leave the dashboard alone.
Setup for kiosk / trade-show / info-screen scenarios
A laptop running a public-facing demo loop or info screen, with the laptop's own screen showing admin tools. You want the demo to keep playing for visitors while you walk away, and the admin screen to be private. Selective lock on the laptop's own screen is exactly what's needed.

The honest caveats
Two things every AFK lock user should know:
- Win+L and Ctrl+Alt+Del can't be blocked. Anyone with physical access to the keyboard can press either and reach the Windows lock screen — at which point they need your Windows password to do anything. The locked monitor stays locked behind a second password when they return. We have a longer piece on this: why no app can block Win+L.
- Selective lock isn't a substitute for OS-level security. If you're AFK for an hour, use Windows' lock in addition. The selective lock is for the in-between moments, not the long-gone moments.
The one-line summary
